August in Bloom

As July loosens its hold and August arrives, the garden, the field, and the shoppe seem to ask us to slow down—to look closely, refresh what has faded, and savor the lavish final movement of summer.

The passage from the July garden to the August garden always catches me a little off guard. Near the orchard, the wild meadow rises almost overnight, gaining height, color, and a certain untamed confidence. The silphium stretches ten feet or more toward the sky, while the wild phlox begins to blaze in earnest. Even the hazy, smoke-infused Canadian breezes seem to have coaxed a new vitality from the plants; they have grown and begun to bloom with a force unlike that of any year past. Smoke or no smoke, August has arrived in its veil of haze, and with it comes the pinnacle of summer bloom.

July Memories

As we move into August, the pleasures of July still linger at the edge of memory. Our last Design Social brought together Chef Toni's summer delights and fleurdetroit's eye for the artful table, where new and antique dishware found easy companionship. It was a joyful month in the field and in the shoppe, full of small gatherings, bright moments, and the kind of inspiration that follows one home.
