Lavender evokes feelings of love, purity, devotion, grace, and a sense calm. Its scent can promote feelings of relaxation. It conveys a message of love and healing and can even aid in reducing headache intensity, easing anxiety, and relieving stress. A lavender plant makes an excellent gift as a houseplant in the winter. With a few easy tips, lavender can thrive indoors.
Indoor Tips
Place your lavender plant in your brightest, sunniest window, preferably south facing. Make sure your plant gets at least 3-4 hours of direct sun a day. Rotate your lavender regularly to ensure even growth and flowering. Lavender is drought tolerant, so it’s a great choice if you occasionally forget to water your plants. In the winter, wait until the top 2” of soil feels dry and then water well. Avoid getting the flowers and leaves wet when you water, as wet foliage can lead to mold.
In the summer, lavender plants prefer to be outdoors. They are deer and rabbit resistant—and bees, butterflies, and hummingbird love lavender!

Favorite Varieties
At fleurdetroit we carry a mix of lavender varieties. Here are some details about a few of our favorites.
Lavandula x ginginsii ‘Goodwin Creek Gray’
We call this Goodwin Creek lavender. It is a hybrid French lavender. It has thick, fuzzy, silver-gray leaves and deep purple flowers. It is one of the best lavender varieties for growing into topiaries. It is also a great choice for keeping indoors through the winter.
Lavandula stoechas ‘Blueberry Ruffles’
We call this Ruffles lavender. It is a Spanish lavender that was bred in Australia. It grows unique dark purple flowers that sprout wispy, ruffled fringe at the top. In the summer, Ruffles lavender has a tremendous flower count that blooms all season.
Lavandula x intermedia ‘Grosso’
Another French hybrid, Grosso lavender is best kept outdoors. It grows a full and lush base, and shoots tall flower spikes topped with dark blue blooms. It is one of the most fragrant lavender varieties and is excellent for drying. It does very well in container plantings and in-ground.
Lavender makes a great addition to your plant collection, regardless of the season. We can all use a little more love and a little more relaxation—and lavender can help bring that to us.
