With a wave of the wand and a wrinkle of her nose, mother nature set a high temperature record for us Michigan folk this late February, then plunged us into a brief freezing spell. And yet, the early breathy warmth brings all of us outdoors to relish the minor miracle of promises of early spring.

Fresh, delicate, impactful—blooming branches are true statement pieces. In Michigan, our favorite blooming branches, such as quince, forsythia and magnolia are available around late February to early March, depending on weather.

The winter solstice ushered in a wave of warm weather. The upper 50-degree weather breached the 60-degree mark briefly, long enough to soak in the springlike vibes on one of my many garden walks that week. The cardinals and chickadees danced in the branches, as they too knew, this anomaly of temperature was a gift before the winter slumber sets in.
